Another word on application catalogues – tutorial (Resources and news about Nokia N900 and Maemo)
[2 views] 6 months ago
languagevalue

Before I get to the point let me remind you about previous word on catalogues, where I’ve covered most of general informations about where to find packages I’m writing about. I will also remind that applications from extras-devel and extras-testing are there because they’re not completely ’safe’ for your N900. This time I will give you step-by-step tutorial how to add them to your device. This thing was mentioned here and there many times, but some of you may have missed it.
First of all run your App manager as usual. Then open menu from toolbar and choose Application catalogues option, which will give you possibility to add new software download sources.

App manager menu
When you have it opened look if you already have extras catalogue, should be installed by default but may be disabled.

Catalogues list in App manager

Catalogue details in App manager
Open catalogue settings and uncheck Disabled field. If you don’t have this catalogue(s) add new with one of following settings:
For extras:
Catalogue name: Maemo Extras
Web address: http://repository.maemo.org/extras/
Distribution: fremantle
Components: free non-free
For extras-testing:
Catalogue name: Maemo Extras-Testing
Web address: http://repository.maemo.org/extras-testing/
Distribution: fremantle
Components: free non-free
For extras-devel:
Catalogue name: Maemo Extras-Devel
Web address: http://repository.maemo.org/extras-devel/
Distribution: fremantle
Components: free non-free
You can check weather package you’re looking for is available in extras, extras-testing or extras-devel using maemo.org Package Interface, which I’ve mentioned before. Just type word from package name and examine findings, package details will give you clue on where to look releases of what you need.

maemo.org Package Interface
From now on I will try to include link to this tutorial every time I post info on extras-testing or extras-devel packages, I hope it will help you.

Doom comes to the N900 (Resources and news about Nokia N900 and Maemo)
[1 views] 7 months ago
languagevalue

The Popular first person shooter Doom explodes its way onto the N900!
Doom is back in the form of prBoom for maemo 5, crossing over from its linux and windows based beginnings and into our palms. The game keeps all of its original graphics and enemies, and is fully customizable through several menus accessed using the backspace key, in which the player can change controls as they wish.
The status bar is also fully customizable, the player can select when to be warned of low health and even how the enemies AI behaves.
The controls are simple the directional keypad controls the player, shift and the z key strafe left and right, the numbers change weapon, the blue arrow key shoots and the space bar is action. All the original difficulty settings are selectable from “im too young to die”, all the way through to “nightmare”. Overall not a bad addition to the N900’s now growing library of games, although there is one annoyance, prBoom was made using the original id shareware version of the game which only includes the first third of the game “knee deep in the dead”, however don’t let this put you off as the game is free to download from the N900’s app manager so its not bad for free.

How To Boost The Performance Of The FM Transmitter on Your N900 (Resources and news about Nokia N900 and Maemo)
[23 views] 8 months ago
languagevalue

The N900 features a FM Transmitter that allows you to play the audio on your device wirelessly to any FM radio, this is especially useful in the car. Unfortunately, there are occasions when the FM transmitter’s performance leaves you wanting and the static in the transmissions renders it worthless.
This happens when the power level of the transmitter drops, such behavior is also triggered when you plug the charger while using it. Fortunately, there is a patch that can fix this and help improve the performance considerably. To download the patch you will need to enable the Extras-Devel repository on your N900. Once you have, simply refresh the Application Manager and look under the ‘System‘ head for ‘fm-boost‘. Simply install it as you would any other application.

From now on, whenever you use the FM transmitter on your N900, run this patch from the Menu and it will jack up the power level to 118, thus improving the transmitter’s performance. Nokia will possibly fix this bug in the upcoming firmware, but till then if you feel the transmitter on your device is not upto it, try using this patch.
I really hope Nokia maximizes the potential of the N900’s transmitter as it is something which is exceedingly useful, but often rendered worthless due to poor performance. Nokia, please do not make a compromise because running it at higher level would eat battery life, just jack it up to the maximum level that the law and hardware can take. If necessary, let users manually control power settings.

Nokia N900 Downloads: Maemo Extras Catalogues for the Nokia N900 (Resources and news about Nokia N900 and Maemo)
[4 views] 8 months ago
languagevalue

Maemo is a really special operation system and in many ways different than Symbian. One difference is the application manager which is based on catalogues. By default only the Nokia Application catalogue is activated. Maemo Extras, a catalogue featuring a bunch of apps, is deactivated by default but can be activated easily.

However, there are also two other big catalogue – Extras-devel and Extra-testing. Developers upload the newest version of their software to Extras-devel. From there the packages go Extras-testing and finally Extras through an automatic and human Quality Assurance process. This is a repository for developers and regular contributors of specific software projects. The applications in Extras-devel and extra-testing are waiting to be tested and aren’t final. There might occur some error so install apps on your own risk.
In order to add Extras-testing and Extras-devel go to the Application manager, select Application catalogs and then new. Than just fill out the detail:

Maemo Extras-Testing
Application manager –> Application catalogs –> New
Catalog name: maemo.org extras-testing
Web address: http://repository.maemo.org/extras-testing
Distribution: fremantle
Components: free non-free
Maemo Extras
Application manager –> Application catalogs –> New
Catalog name: Maemo Extras-devel
Web address: http://repository.maemo.org/extras-devel
Distribution: fremantle
Components: free non-free

Now you will find a pretty long list with some really nice and useful application. Enjoy!

N900 tips & tricks: Where can you find 3rd party apps? (Resources and news about Nokia N900 and Maemo)
[3 views] 10 months ago
If you have been reading my Nokia N900 posts, then you may be wondering how I am getting all of these additional applications on the N900 since the Ovi Store is not yet open for business. If you have used one of the older Maemo Nseries Internet Tablets then you are familiar with using the Application Manager to access repositories. There are various repositories and I some are highly experimental where “normal” users probably shouldn’t be dwelling too much. It seems that Mark over at The Nokia Blog and I are on the same page and he already assembled a great post on Maemo repositories on the N900 so I won’t repeat all that he wrote here with my own post and recommend you head over there to see how to access repositories.

I was very pleased to see that Nokia has integrated an automatic notification system through the Application Manager so that you receive a yellow notification in the upper notification area when updates to applications you installed are present. You then tap the notification and walk through the update wizard to install the program update.
I have added all the repositories I can find with N900 applications and am currently testing out the following 3rd party applications:
- Almost TI Graphing Calculator
- AP News desktop widget
- Bounce Evolution game
- Classic Gaming Wallpapers
- DialCentral (Google Voice application)
- Documents To Go
- Facebook Widget and Photo Uploader
- FBReader
- FMRadio (enables the FM radio hardware installed in the N900)
- Foreca Weather
- gPodder podcatcher
- Hermes
- Maelstrom game (Asteroids clone)
- Maemo WordPy
- Mauku and Mauku widget
- Mplayer
- mSaber
- Password Safe
- Personal Photo Frame
- Pixelpipe
- Qik
- SolarWolf game
- Plugins (Windows Live for IM, Connection Switcher, Evernote Sharing, Load-applet, Simple Brightness applet)
There are many more apps, especially those for the serious geek such as SSH, Telnet, game emulators, and many more. A large number of these are in early development so make sure you take care when loading up a ton of apps. So far, I have yet to experience any issues with apps I have loaded and enjoy checking the list every couple of days to see what these amazing Maemo developers have added. So far, all of these apps are free too.

MAFW renderer plugin with equalizer (Resources and news about Nokia N900 and Maemo)
[38 views] 10 months ago
Reading Maemo Brainstorm I happened upon a complaint: Mediaplayer and other players do not have an equalizer. Though I don’t use equalizers very often, sometimes I did it, and I find a bit upset not having one in such cool device.
Being a MAFW development, I think MAFW can provide this feature. So I made a fork from mafw-gst-renderer, and I’m pleased to announce mafw-gst-eq-renderer, which can be summarized as mafw-gst-renderer + equalizer. It’s totally open, and you can follow its development from gitorious. It must be clear that this plugin is not part of official MAFW, but a community plugin that I did in my free time.
The main goals for this fork were adding equalizing capabilities to mafw-gst-renderer, and providing a graphical equalizer. I think both were achieved.
Both in Gitorious and Projects Maemo you can find two branches/flavours.
MTR (master branch) is the upstream development: this provides Mafw-Gst-Eq-Renderer-Plugin, which creates a Mafw-Gst-Eq-Renderer source, which is accessed through gsteqrenderer UUID. If you install it in your N900, you’ll have two renderers: the original one (mafw-gst-renderer) and the new one (mafw-gst-eq-renderer).
Unfortunately, Mediaplayer only handles mafw-gst-renderer. If you want to use mafw-gst-eq-renderer instead, you must replace mafw-gst-renderer with the MGR flavour (mafw-gst-renderer branch). It provides the same capabilities as MTR flavour, but inherits the names from mafw-gst-renderer: the plugin provided is named Mafw-Gst-Renderer-Plugin, which creates a Mafw-Gst-Renderer source that can be accessed through gstrenderer UUID. Install this flavour and remove mafw-gst-renderer and Mediaplayer will be able to use the equalizer.
Setting equalizer values is as easy as changing values in GConf. If you’re writting your own mediaplayer, you can provide your own equalizer but reading/writting gconf values. For those that doesn’t have an equalizer (like Mediaplayer) a Control Panel applet is provided. With the applet a set of predefined presets are provided, though applet allow to save user configurations.
My aim is to synchronize this development with original mafw-gst-renderer, integrating all relevant changes whenever new versions are released.
I hope you find this plugin useful.

Keeping the autotools guys happy with qmake (Resources and news about Nokia N900 and Maemo)
[20 views] 10 months ago
I’m still figuring out how to do the same thing with cmake, but various bloggers and comments appear to be promising that it’ll be even more easy.
But this is a message for probably all Nokia teams who are making Qt-based libraries:
First open your src/src.pro file and add this stuff:
CONFIG += create_pc create_prl
QMAKE_PKGCONFIG_REQUIRES = QtGui
pkgconfig.files = packagename.pc
pkgconfig.path = $$(DESTDIR)$$[QT_INSTALL_LIBS]/pkgconfig
INSTALLS += target headers pkgconfig
Now open your debian/$package-dev.install file and add this line:
usr/lib/pkgconfig
You’ll be doing all the autotools people a tremendous favor.
Next, open the README file and document that you need to use qmake-qt4 on Debian or make either qmake-qt3 or qmake-qt4 work flawlessly with your build environment. Perhaps also mention how to set the install prefix, how to make qmake find and install .pc files in another location, stuff like that. I find that this is lacking for almost every Qt-based library.
You’ll be doing everybody who wants to use your software a tremendous favor.

Nokia N900 Easter Egg – FM Radio! (Resources and news about Nokia N900 and Maemo)
[50 views] 10 months ago

One of the ‘easter eggs’ hidden on the Nokia N800 was an FM radio receiver. The device shipped without any software to take advantage of the hardware, but the community came through with a solution to allow N800 owners to listen to FM radio through their device. While the Nokia N810 did not have the same little treasure, it appears as though the Nokia N900 does, and there’s already a solution to get it working!
Martin Grimme at Python and More has put together a package called n900-fmrx-enabler which enables the FM antenna when prompted, and then disables it again, to conserve battery. For right now, it’s no easy task, as the sound doesn’t immediately get output to the speakers, so Martin’s come up with a workaround. Unfortunately, this workaround sucks down the battery quite quickly.
If you’re feeling rather daring, you can install fmradio from the extras-testing repository, to give it a go. Is FM radio something you would use often, or do you think it’s rather silly, given the local storage and 3G connectivity that the N900 has?
(Image is from atmasphere.net and shows the FM Radio app on the N800)

300 Nokia N900 on the hands of developers! (Resources and news about Nokia N900 and Maemo)
[4 views] 11 months ago
languagevalue
Unbelievable! Over 300 developers have been given a Nokia N900 pre-final production version for a 6 month loan. Just two questions, where and why?
The first one would give you a clue for the second one. Where? On the Maemo Summit 2009 that is taking place in Amsterdam which is an annual get-together of the Maemo Community (this is the second one). Technology enthusiasts, apps developers, and platform developers meet to network, share their latest innovation, learn about future trends and just have fun. The Nokia N900 built on Maemo 5 is in the spotlight of this year’s event (more info about this event, click here).
So now you can guess why? I hope that these like guys take advantage of the situation that they have on their hands by creating the most wonderful apps we can expect from the Nokia N900.
If you don’t believe in this news, you can see it with your own eyes (through a YouTube video)

Irreco on the Nokia N900 (Resources and news about Nokia N900 and Maemo)
[21 views] 11 months ago
languagetypetext/htmlvalue

Nokia N900
Irreco is an application that allows you to use your Nokia Tablet PC (in this case the Nokia N900) as a remote control with the built in Infrared.
You can see the link to the official Irreco site here.
With Irreco and the presence of an IR port on your mobile device you can control Infrared compatible devices like televisions, DVD players and Air Conditioners. Irreco also has a remote editor which you can use to place buttons to the screen and customize the remote in your own way.
Irreco certainly will not change the way we live our life but having a universal remote in your mobile phone is definitely a feature to boast about. Not too long ago, Psiloc had developed a similar software for Nokia S60 v1,v2,v3 devices which was somewhat successful with the aficionados but later lost its way through since many top end Nokia devices did not have the Infrared port, which is necessary for the mobile device to function as a remote.
Nokia tablet PC’s have had a lot of success as tablet PC’s but have never really been a mass market product for Nokia, this could change with the Nokia N900, simply because not only is it going to be Nokias top end cellphone but also a full-fledged tablet PC.
With the success of the N900, the usage of Irreco is bound to be appreciated, we shall wait to see the impact Irreco has on the N900 users, depending on that, nokia might just favour a version of Irreco for the Symbian users as well. Besides, we might see the IR port coming back to Nokia devices on mass market level again. Will the IR port ever be back on all nokia devices?
That remains to be seen, until the N900 is launched and Irreco is judged.

[VNC Viewer] VNC Viewer important for N900 :-) (All the resources for Nokia N800 and N810)
[266 views] more than one year ago
The online part of a big german Weekly magazine (spiegel.de) has a nice little review on the N900. We are very proude, that they mentions the VNC software in the short list of important applications.
http://www.spiegel.de/netzwelt/gadgets/0,1518,645529,00.html
Hopefully we will have a chance to test it on a N900 soon:-)
It is uploaded to fremantle-extras-builder. If anybody has a real N900 device, we would be happy to read what you. I will open a bug report for your comments (subject: Unknown status on N900).

Hack to disable Flash Lite auto screen orientation/rotation on Nokia 5800 (and others) (Developing Symbian S60 applications)

It’s cool Nokia 5800 automatically rotates the screen to landscape/portrait according to phone orientation. However, you do not want that to happen always when developing Flash Lite applications. Apparently there is no way to disable this ‘freature’ directly from Flash Lite [1].

[Advanced Power] Advanced Power Monitor 0.4.0 and Advanced Power 0.3.5 (All the resources for Nokia N800 and N810)
[58 views] more than one year ago
So, Advanced Power splitted into 2 packcages:
- Advanced Power Monitor (APM) 0.4.0
- Advanced Power (AP) 0.3.5
First one is a daemon, that emitts signals on properties changes, second is still statusbar item, but now it gets information from APM via D-Bus. And, of course, advanced-power package now also depends on advanced-power-monitor.

[KOrganizer/Platform-independent KDEPIMPI] kdepimpi version 2.2.10 -- huge improvements, available now (All the resources for Nokia N800 and N810)
[31 views] more than one year ago
I've just discovered that the latest version of KDEPIMPI (2.10), compiled for the Open Embedded project, combined with the libqt-mt.so.3 library (for Zaurus qt3 compatibility) produce a working, stable, PIM suite. The menus, icons, and functions are much better, though it isn't Hildonized. The calendar/to-list is much better, the address book is fully functional, and synchronizing works. The mail progam (ompi) and cell-phone data exchange (kammu, based on gammu) each run but are untested.
Many thanks to: Zautrix (the original author of KDEPIMPI), yonggun on OESF for compiling the package, and tz1 for the qt3 library.
The .deb package is available via the OESF forum (for members) or on the Maemo Garage kdepimpi site.
